Hang up

Ends the call exactly where you decided. It is the way to make visible on the diagram a branch that doesn't take the call, instead of letting it trail off.

At a glance

How it works

The module stops the journey and hangs up the call. It has neither settings nor an output: anything placed after it would never be played.

The same effect happens everywhere else in the plan as soon as a triggered output isn't connected to anything: the call is hung up. This explains half the calls that "just cut off by themselves." The difference is entirely about readability: a plan that ends on a Hang up module shows a decision, a plan that ends on an unconnected output shows an oversight, and nobody can tell which of the two they're looking at six months later.

Place it, then, on branches where you decided not to take the call: a caller filtered by an Access list, a closing time slot after the announcement, a menu key you don't want to serve.

Nothing forces you to cut the call short. An announcement played just before, using Play a file, tells the caller why the call is ending. And if you want to collect a message instead of hanging up, it's the Voicemail module you need: it also ends the journey.

Step by step

  1. Identify the branch of your plan that shouldn't lead to a conversation.
  2. If the caller needs to understand why the call is ending, first place a Play a file module with the announcement you want.
  3. Take Hang up from the palette and place the Hang up module next.
  4. Connect the previous module's output to its input.
  5. Don't expect any output on this module: it has none.
  6. Click Save in the editor's toolbar, then Apply changes.
  7. Make a real call putting yourself in the targeted case, and check that the announcement is played all the way through before the call ends.

If it doesn't work

The call is cut off even though I didn't place any Hang up. A triggered output further up isn't connected to anything: the Timeout of a queue or a menu, the Outside hours of a time condition, the Unknown of a dispatcher. Scan the outputs and connect any that are left unconnected.

The caller hears silence before the call ends. Nothing is played before the hangup. Place a Play a file module right before Hang up to announce the end of the call.

The announcement is cut off in the middle. Check that Play a file actually comes before Hang up and isn't wired in parallel. The module plays the announcement all the way through before handing off.

I'd like to collect a message instead of cutting off. Replace Hang up with a Voicemail module, which also ends the journey but records the caller.

I can't place anything after the Hang up. This is intentional: the module has no output. Whatever must happen before ending the call must be placed before it.
